Step into a world with me that is filled with magic and charm as you create your very own Witch Ball ornament! Magical witch balls are fun DIY’s that bring an earthy and positive vibe to any space. These non traditional ornaments shine on the Christmas tree or as decor in your home or altar.
Witch ball history
Surprisingly or not, witch balls date back to the 17th century. Originally a clear glass ball that was hung in the windows to ward off negative and evil spirits. As time passed, makers were including different colors and strands of pulled glass inside the ball. It was believed that bright colors would entice the evil spirits and the glass strands would trap the evil inside. Some witch balls even included holy water or salt.
Nowadays these witch balls or witch bulb ornaments are made in different styles and designs or with a variety of materials and ingredients. They are popularized as enchanting home decor pieces that add a mystical touch to any space.
Choosing your materials
Magical balls are usually filled with powerful crystals, aromatic herbs, and natural elements symbolizing various intentions and energies. The best part about making them yourself is personalizing them and focusing your intentions and visualizing the energy that you want your witch ball to attract.
You can use a variety of flowers, herbs and different items in each of them to create unique and custom bulbs. Each element has a specific purpose and energy. I suggest you collect any materials that offer the properties you want or are interested in, as well as items that speak to you. Just be sure that whatever you add has the energy you intend to manifest.
I like to add different things that are beautiful like a key or faux flower. I think the use of colorful or symbolic pieces really adds to these witch balls. Another thing that makes these so personal is the extra pieces you add that are not so original.

Witch ball supply list / mood board
Here is a mood board supply list created for inspiration of different items you could use in your witch ball.
The Magical Process
Before we begin, I want to make a point that there is no right or wrong way to make this. In fact, I don’t really have directions. In this particular project
First, cleanse all your materials, particularly the crystals and herbs. You can do this by passing them through sage smoke or leaving them under the moonlight. This step is important to remove any negative energy they might have absorbed.
Next, pop off the top of the ornament, the cap and hanger so we can start to fill the clear bulb. You can start with a base / foundation to the ball with sea salt or Himalayan salt, feathers, flower pedals, ground herbs, anything you’d like.
Now creatively layer the ingredients and herbs that you want. I think it’s best to add ingredients with the properties you want so that this truly speaks to you. It is a great way to bring in different magical properties and really create a personalized witch ball. I also like the use of an assortment of herbs, dried flowers and crystals. In some of the bulbs I designed, I added a key, pinecones and faux flowers. The possibilities are endless when making these. I think that is what makes them even more enjoyable to make.
When creating these, work with intention considering the focus and magical properties you are trying to manifest.
Finally, seal your ornament. In addition, you can wrap the hemp twine around the top. As you do this, visualize the twine creating a protective barrier that seals in the positive energies and wards off any negative ones.
