Gather your materials and let’s get crafting!
So a funny story… A couple years ago I made a top hat from an old tomato paste can and poster board (yes that long ago, hah!). At first, I was going to turn it into an ornament but never got around to it. Well I kept it all this time because I would eventually finish the project or find another way to use it. Welp I finally found a use for it, this project!
My original idea was to use a styrofoam ball for the head but the size I have was way off. Like Chris Farley or Betelgeuse at the end of Beetlejuice, a small head with a large body. So I scratched that idea and went on to look for something else. That’s when I saw the old top hat from a couple years ago that I made. I pulled that out and it fit perfectly! No needing to cut the bottle or anything, it just sits on the neck of the bottle as if it was meant to be. So finally I get to share this project with you.
Instructions
Now for the instructions. Firstly, start by painting your pomegranate bottle. I applied multiple coats, allowing it to dry in between each coat.
In the meantime let’s make the top hat. Cut a circle out of heavy cardstock or poster board that measures larger than the can. I chose a 4 inch circle for the brim of my top hat. Then take any 6 ounce empty tomato paste can that is thin/tall and remove the label and paint black.
Once dry, trace the can in the center of the paper circle and draw crossing lines. Please refer to my graphic for instruction, the next image below. This is where we are going to cut triangle slits in the center and use these to glue the cardstock/poster board brim to the can. This creates the top hat. Once the glue is set, paint the brim of the hat black if not using black cardstock.
Next, paint black circles for the eyes and add a mouth. Leave space for your cute pipe cleaner nose. While that dries, we can form the nose. I took an orange pipe cleaner and wrapped it around two different size markers. I started with the thick marker which formed the base of the nose and switched to a thin marker to finish the wrapping at the tip of the nose. Again, please see my next graphic to illustrate how the nose looks.
When all the paint has dried and you finished making the nose, let’s glue it all together and bring our snowman to life. Using hot glue, attach the nose and the buttons of the snowman. I used mini Christmas bows, I just really liked the unique look and shiny-ness that comes from those bows. You can use many different things to make them, including paint. Check out my list of other button ideas, too.
Add the top hat over the neck of the bottle and you are all finished. I added a thin ribbon to the neck which to me adds a little dimension as a sparkly scarf. Here you could use different materials to create different looks as well, or omit it completely. My next one, I’m going to add a tie. So again, you can add whatever you love and think looks great.
