Flower painting is actually extremely easy to make with a plastic bag and some paint. It is a wonderful way to make beautiful floral art and is perfect for all ages and skill levels. This simple project is a great rainy day craft. It makes lovely art and can even be escalated with a little detail.
I love abstract painting, and fun techniques that are so easy to recreate and this plastic bag trick is just that. No flower turns out the same so each is quite unique in their own way and I love that too. Now it’s your turn to get inspired and make your own flower art that you can love as well.
Materials for flower painting
- Acrylic paint
- Canvas, acrylic paper pad, poster board
- Plastic bag
- Rubber band (optional)
- Large paint palette or paper plate
- Paint brush (optional)
Instructions
Grab your materials and let’s get painting.
At first you want to choose the colors your flowers are going to be. You can keep them simple with minimal colors, or choose many.
Add a few drops of each color on a plate or paint palette. You’re going to dip the air filled bag into the paint or use a paint brush to paint it onto the bag.
Then take a plastic bag and tie a small knot at the bottom of the bag. Flip it inside out and fill with air. Grab a hold on the top of the bag and blow air into it while closing your hand to secure the air inside.
You can use your hand to secure the top or use a rubber band to tie the bag off. I like using my hand in case I need to add more air or adjust the fullness of the bag.
Make sure your bag has paint on it. You want enough paint to leave a good press onto paper or canvas, but not too much as it will leave a glob of paint and a weird mess that looks nothing like a flower impression. If need be, dab off the bag on a separate plate or surface.
When ready, press the air filled bag onto your paper or canvas in random spots to create an abstract art piece. You can stamp multiple flowers or a single flower. Get creative here with how you want it to look. I like to turn the bag around or the surface you are painting on, so the flower looks different each press.
If you notice parts of the bag are not leaving a good impression or stamp, add a little more paint wherever it’s needed.
Add more detail to your flowers
So you can choose to keep it super simple with just pressing the bag onto your paint surface. This is a great option for beginners or younger kids.
Or you can add more detail with a fine tip paintbrush by painting an outline to the petals and then lines to represent definition and veining in the flower petals. Also by adding leaves or other floral additions.
Overall, flower paintings can be easy to make with a few easy to obtain materials. This craft is great for kids or adults, beginners at painting or more advanced who just want to make cute flower art.
