Valentine’s Day foam ball garland is one simple yet adorable craft for the holiday. Valentine’s Day is a special time for expressing love and affection and is also a time when many people enjoy decorating their homes for the holiday.
The dollar store has a lot of cute stuff that is relatively inexpensive. They even offer a dollar plus selection with a variety of items that cost between $3 and $5. That’s great and all but I like to put my own twist on things or make projects from scratch. So even though they are cute, I chose to make my own garland and you can too.
Materials
- Pack foam balls (red, white and pink) small and large – from the Dollar Tree
- Embroidery floss -thicker than string
- Needle (medium sized)
With a few materials we can take the foam balls which are considered vase fillers and turn them into a cute garland for a mantle, tree, around a door or to use in many other creative ways.
Instructions
Grab your materials and let’s get crafting. I decided on a pattern before I started threading the garland together. My pattern is: large white ball – small pink ball – large red ball – small white ball – large pink ball – small red ball and repeat.
I used the majority of the bag of foam balls. I stopped after I ran out of larger sized balls because I wanted to keep it symmetrical. With the leftover pieces from all the bags I was able to make a long garland for my fireplace mantle. If you only use one bag, you should have enough to create a strand that is about 50 inches long, depending on the variety of the balls in the package as it may vary. This is with all pieces touching and no gaps between the foam balls.
Obviously if you space them out you will get a longer garland strand. The one issue I found was when they are spaced apart it’s more likely for the strand to wind and tangle. With that said, this is your garland so do whichever you like best.
So I bought 4 packs and turned them into garland strands. I used each bag to make a strand. I decided not to sew one super long garland for a couple reasons. Firstly, I didn’t know exactly how I wanted to use them (on my Valentine’s day tree, as the garland for my kitchen, or on a mantle, etcetera). Secondly, I didn’t know how long I wanted them to be. So I chose to make them all the same (as similar as possible) and tied them off after each bag. Feel free to make them as long or as short as you want and that will determine how many bags you will need.
Once you’ve finished threading all the foam balls, tie a hoop knot at each end so you can hang the garland on a command hook or nail.
I think the garland adds a lovely Valentine’s day vibe to any space and it makes a big impact with a little amount of materials and effort.
Ways to decorate with a Valentine’s Day foam ball garland
- Draped around a tree decorated for Valentine’s Day.
- Across a mantle
- Around a door frame
- Remember those beaded door curtains? With enough bags, you could recreate the 60s/70s fan favorite.
- A beaded tassel for a coffee table or dining table centerpiece
So there you have it, a Valentine’s Day foam ball garland is an easy to make, cost effective way to add a touch of love to your home for Valentine’s Day!
