Every dad is special, and nothing says “I love you” more than a handmade tool cutout birthday card. A tool cut out birthday card is a wonderful surprise for any dad who likes to get his hands dirty.
My father’s birthday was yesterday so I wanted to make him a cardstock insert card. Now there are lots to choose from but I wanted to do something different.
This project is made in Cricut Design Space. I chose an image of tools – screwdriver, hammer, wrench and used those three images separately to create a pattern and each tool is cut from the front of the card.
Materials for tool cutout birthday card
- 3 Cardstock paper (8.5″x11″ – 1 for the card, 1 for the insert, 1 small piece for the word dad)
- Cutting mat – light grip
- Cutting machine
- Scoring wheel or scoring knife & board
- Foam glue dots
- Glue stick (optional)
When you have all the materials and you’re ready, let’s get crafting.
How to make tool cutout birthday card for dad
First, open my Tool Cutout Card project in Cricut Design Space. The project will look like the screenshot in the image below. Click “Customize” to edit the project before cutting. When ready, click “Make It” and follow the directions as prompted in the design space program.
With all pieces cut, we can assemble. 1 piece of paper is the card, another is the insert that goes behind the front of the card. You also have an elongated diamond piece of paper and the letters D-A-D.
I used a glue stick to add a little adhesive to my card to keep the cardstock insert secure against the front. This is optional, but not required. If you use glue, open the card and add glue on the inside of the front of the card. Add the insert and press together until the glue dries.
Next, using glue dots (I think this gives the card more dimension) position the diamond shape centered on the front of the card. This should fit with a little border around the shape. Then, add glue dots to the back of the letters and center those on top of the diamond cut out that you added prior to this step.
When those components are glued and dried, you’re all done.
Lastly, add a cute note or quote on the inside and your card is ready for dad on his birthday.
